When Depression Feels Like Emptiness: Healing Through Self-Expression

When You Feel Empty Inside

When you look into your eyes in the mirror and all you see is emptiness, you know you’ve reached the bottom of your energetic container.
You can’t feel much at all — or all you feel is emotional pain and a deep desire to run away from it.

You feel that everything is hopeless. You’ve tried so hard, yet here you are again, exhausted, disappointed, and wondering what’s left to try.

It doesn’t matter how much you have, who stands beside you, or where you live. If you feel empty inside, nothing seems to reach you. No success, no relationship, no pleasure can touch that place.

Depression Is a Cry for Connection

Others call this depression; I often see it as a cry for connection and love.

In my work as a trauma-informed psychotherapist in London, I’ve witnessed how many people who reach this place simply need to feel again. They long to be held and understood in a space where they can safely reconnect with themselves.

You didn’t arrive here out of the blue. On some level, you always knew something wasn’t right, but you had to keep going. Maybe it wasn’t the right time. Maybe fear of losing someone, or something, felt too big. Perhaps you stayed in a relationship that was hurting you because you hoped love would fix it.

The reason matters less right now. What matters is learning to listen to what your depression is trying to express.

The Healing Power of Expression

Depression often hides a deeper truth: a lack of self-expression.
When we silence our feelings or our needs, the energy of that silence turns inward, becoming heaviness, numbness, or despair.

Healing begins when you start expressing your truth, first to yourself and then, slowly, to the world.
It may feel raw or unfamiliar, but as you release what was buried, your body and heart begin to breathe again.

Truth will always make you stronger, even when it looks messy at first.
As a therapist, my role is to guide you gently toward that truth through compassionate questions and somatic awareness, so you can reconnect with your authentic self.

Finding Support for Depression in London or Online

If you recognise yourself in these words, you don’t have to face this alone.
Together we can explore what your depression is asking you to express and help you find your way back to connection, peace, and inner strength.

I offer depression therapy in London (NW6) and online counselling across the UK, combining body–mind psychotherapy, inner-child healing, and trauma-informed care.

If you’re ready to begin this journey, I’d be honoured to walk beside you.
